From smarter fish-finding electronics to refined rods and electric fishing kayaks, the ICAST 2026 winners reveal where fishing equipment is heading next.

The International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades—better known as ICAST—returned to Orlando in July 2026 with another large showcase of rods, reels, lures, electronics, storage systems and on-the-water technology.
The show’s New Product Showcase recognizes products across 39 categories, making it a useful snapshot of the ideas currently shaping recreational fishing.
Looking beyond individual awards, this year’s category winners point to three major trends: smarter electronics, more accessible high-performance tackle and better integration between fishing gear and the way anglers move on the water.
Smarter Information on the Water
Marine electronics continue to attract enormous attention.
Among the award-winning products of 2026 was a sonar fish finder from a certain company, which once again demonstrates that real-time underwater imaging remains at the core of product development. Modern systems are dedicated to providing clearer images and faster interpretation speeds, thereby giving anglers more information about underwater structures, fish locations, and bait movement.

The most important development may not simply be better pictures. It is the integration of sonar, mapping, saved locations and boat control into a more connected fishing system.
As electronics become more capable, anglers will also need to decide how much technology fits their preferred style of fishing. Some want maximum information, while others value a simpler and more traditional experience.
Performance Is Reaching More Anglers
Innovation is not limited to premium electronics.
A certain brand's freshwater series received the 2026 freshwater rod category award. The updated range includes 29 models, carbon-fiber blanks, redesigned cork handles and improvements intended to help multi-piece rods maintain the feel and performance associated with one-piece designs.

This reflects a broader direction in the tackle industry: bringing materials and construction ideas once associated with high-end products into more practical, widely usable equipment.
For anglers, that means more choices—but also a greater need to look beyond marketing language. A rod should still be selected according to lure weight, power, action, target species and fishing environment.
Mobility Is Becoming Part of the Tackle System
The appearance of intelligent electric fishing kayaks among the category winners shows how quickly personal watercraft are evolving.
Kayak fishing has grown because it offers access to water that may be difficult or expensive to reach with a conventional boat. Electric propulsion, onboard power systems and integrated electronics are now turning the kayak into a compact fishing platform.
At the same time, products such as specialized rod lockers, modular bait boxes and magnetic tackle organizers show that manufacturers are paying closer attention to storage and workflow.
This matters because anglers do not experience equipment as separate objects. Rods, reels, tackle boxes, electronics and watercraft must work together in limited space and changing weather.
Lures and Fundamentals Still Matter
Even at a technology-heavy show, traditional tackle remains central.
New lure designs continue to experiment with sound, vibration, jointed movement and more realistic action. Rod and reel manufacturers are pursuing lower weight, smoother operation and improved durability.
The underlying goal has not changed: help anglers cast accurately, control a presentation and land fish reliably.
ICAST 2026 suggests that the future of fishing will be more connected and specialized. Yet innovation is most valuable when it solves a real problem. A new product should make fishing more effective, more convenient or more enjoyable—not simply add another item to the tackle box.
Before upgrading, anglers should ask a simple question: will this equipment improve the way I actually fish?
That practical approach is likely to remain useful long after the newest products leave the show floor.
