Forward-facing sonar has become one of fishing’s most debated technologies. New research suggests it changes how anglers fish—but may not automatically help them catch more.
Forward-facing sonar has moved from tournament boats into the wider recreational fishing world, becoming one of the most talked-about developments in modern angling.
Unlike traditional fish finders, which mainly display what has already passed beneath a boat, forward-facing sonar allows anglers to observe fish, structure and even lure movement in near real time. For some anglers, that creates a more efficient and educational day on the water. For others, it raises questions about sportsmanship, fishing pressure and whether technology is changing the experience too quickly.
A Study With Unexpected Results
A 2026 randomized controlled experiment highlighted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources produced results that challenge some common assumptions.
Researchers compared smallmouth bass fishing with and without forward-facing sonar. When sonar was used, anglers spent more time searching and caught fish that were, on average, approximately 25 millimeters longer. Surprisingly, however, their overall catch rate was lower.
The study focused on a specific species and setting, so it should not be treated as the final answer for every lake or fishing style. Still, it suggests that seeing more fish does not automatically mean catching more fish.
Sonar may help an angler identify a promising target, but presentation remains essential. Lure size, color, sink rate, line visibility, hook sharpness and retrieve speed still determine whether a fish commits.
Why Anglers Remain Divided
Supporters see forward-facing sonar as a learning tool. It can reveal how suspended fish react to a lure, how predators use underwater structure and how fish move when water conditions change.
Critics worry that widespread adoption could concentrate fishing pressure on individual fish or previously difficult-to-find schools. Similar debates are appearing in fishing tournaments, local clubs and fisheries-management discussions across North America.
The early evidence, however, is more nuanced than the online arguments. Fisheries researchers have not found that sonar always increases catch, and its effects may differ greatly by species, season and angler behavior.
Electronics Do Not Replace Good Tackle Decisions
Even with a live image on the screen, an angler still has to make the right cast and convince the fish to strike.
A balanced rod-and-reel setup helps deliver a lure accurately. Reliable line improves sensitivity and control. The lure must run at the correct depth and maintain a natural action. When fish follow without biting, small changes in retrieve speed or lure profile can matter more than another hour of searching.
That may be the most useful lesson from the sonar debate: technology supplies information, but tackle selection and angler judgment turn information into results.
Finding a Responsible Balance
Anglers should follow local regulations, respect tournament rules and consider limiting unnecessary pressure on vulnerable fish. Catch-and-release practices, careful fish handling and protecting spawning areas remain important whether electronics are used or not.Forward-facing sonar will continue to develop. The most successful anglers will probably be those who treat it as one tool among many—not as a substitute for water knowledge, thoughtful lure selection and time spent learning fish behavior.
